Emergency Situation Report: Lasciidle and Xagal – Saaxil Region
Introduction
The Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs (MORHA) wishes to bring urgent attention to the escalating humanitarian crisis in the communities of Lasciidle and Xagal, located in the Saaxil Region. These areas have been severely affected by the ongoing drought, which has led to extensive disruption of livelihoods and increased vulnerability of the population.
Affected Population
According to the rapid field assessments conducted by MORHA in close coordination with regional and district authorities, as well as community representatives:
- Total affected households: 3,765
- Estimated population: approximately 22,590 people (average 6 persons per household)
- The drought has caused a significant loss of income sources, livestock depletion, food insecurity, and widespread displacement risks.
- Consultations and Coordination
MORHA has undertaken a series of consultations with:
- Community leaders and civil society organizations in both Lasciidle and Xagal.
- Saaxil Regional Administration and local district authorities.
- Community-based relief committees who provided on-the-ground updates on priority needs.
The findings from these engagements confirm that the drought has created a state of acute humanitarian emergency, leaving families unable to meet their basic daily survival needs.
Priority Needs Identified
The assessment highlights the following urgent requirements:
- Food Assistance:
- Households lack sufficient food supplies due to crop failure and livestock losses.
- Malnutrition risks, particularly among children and pregnant women, are increasing.
- Water Supply:
- Communities are facing critical shortages of safe drinking water.
- Existing water points are either dried up or severely overstretched.
- Emergency Shelter:
- Many families are displaced or living in inadequate shelters.
- There is a high demand for temporary emergency shelters to protect households against harsh weather.
Reflections and Humanitarian Appeal
The Ministry stresses that the situation in Lasciidle and Xagal requires immediate and coordinated humanitarian intervention. Without timely support, the affected communities face heightened risks of:
- Severe malnutrition outbreaks.
- Increased displacement towards urban centers.
- Deteriorating health conditions due to lack of safe water and shelter.
